Warner Bros. will acquire Midway Games

According to the online edition of the Chicago Tribune, the acquisition of bankrupt company Midway Games by Warner Bros. received the legal approval to continue (Midway developed and published titles such as Mortal Kombat, Ms. Pac-Man, Spy Hunter, Tron and NBA Jam.) The acquisition had been stopped following certain legal disputes over several of Midway's IPs. This conflict saw the involvement of several companies, including Threshold Entertainment (they produced two movies based on Mortal Kombat beat'em-up series) and Tigon Studios (founded by actor Vin Diesel, they developed Wheelman in partnership with Midway). Warner Bros. offered 33 million dollars for the purchase of all Midway assets.

EVE Online banker embezzles billions of kredits

According to Reuters, the CEO of EBank, the largest player-run bank of space MMO EVE Online, stole billions of kredits and exchanged them for real money. The gamer in question is a 27-year old Australian playing as Ricdic. Married and father of two children, the Australian player said he stole the 200 billion kredits and sold them for 5.100 dollars in order to solve certain real-life financial problems. “It was a very on the spot decision”, he said. CCP Games deactivated Ricdic's account because his act “unbalances the game” (as specified by company representative Ned Coker). This penalty wouldn't have been applied if Ricdic had only stolen the kredits, without also selling them for real money. "We have never seen ourselves as gods who make the rules of social interaction," said CCP economics adviser Eyjolfur Gudmundsson. "You are able to lose the things you have created. That's what makes the world interesting." EBank was known as one of the few trustworthy player-run banks in EVE Online, and CEO Ricdic also had a positive reputation. Following this incident, EBank had to deal with a wave of panic among customers, but the other players running the bank managed to keep it afloat.

Fallout 3 available at half the price this week-end on Steam

Valve Software announced that postapocalyptic RPG Fallout 3 will be available on Steam at half the price (22.49 euro) this week-end. Bethesda Softworks had unveiled they would launch this summer another two DLCs for Fallout 3: Point Lookout (already available) and Mothership Zeta (available in late July). Before these, the developers had offered three more downloadable content packages: Operation Anchorage, The Pitt and Broken Steel.

Ubisoft will publish simulator Heroes Over Europe

Ubisoft announced it acquired the rights to publish simulator Heroes Over Europe, sequel to Heroes of the Pacific. This announcement comes after, early this year, publisher Red Mile had unveiled that the project's fate has become uncertain after Atari abandoned it. Ubisoft also specified that it will launch Heroes Over Europe on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in September 2009. Developed by Australian studios Transmission Games, this new title will allow players to follow the stories of three Allied pilots and take part in some of the most important aerial battles of World War II, including those above London, Berlin and the French Alps. Heroes Over Europe will make use of a new engine and it will feature four online game modes for up to 16 players, customizable planes and localized damage.

Deep Silver announces the international launch date for RPG Risen

Deep Silver announced that the international launch date for fantasy RPG Risen was established for October 2. According to Deep Silver Brand Manager Daniel Oberlerchner, the game already entered the beta phase, and all the dialogues have already been recorded. Risen is being developed by Piranha Bytes, creators of the Gothic series, without being linked to it.

CCP announces November launch date for EVE: The Burning Life, a novel based on EVE Online

CCP Games informed us that the novel EVE: The Burning Life, based on the universe of space MMO EVE Online, will be published in November 2009 via partnerships with Tor Books and Orion Books. The author of the book is Hjalti Danielsson, currently working as CCP's main creative writer; he is responsible for much of the background story of New Eden, and he wrote over 70 short stories and plays based on it. The story recounted in The Burning Life's 400 pages will complement the one from the game, the same way as EVE: The Empyrean Age (written by Tony Gonzales) did in 2008.

BIART moves U-WARS to 2010

Russian studios BIART announced they will postpone the launch of squad-based shooter U-WARS for the next year, work on the project having started in 2007. The story of U-WARS will take place in the near future, will have a 2-year span, and will focus on a conflict between the US / NATO and North Korea, China, Syria and Iran. In U-WARS, players wil be able to control an elite squad during missions both on land and underwater. The PC version will make use of the NVIDIA PhysX technology.

Eidos Interactive announced they will launch this month two new DLCs for strategy game Battlestations: Pacific, and both will be available via Games for Windows LIVE The Mustang Pack will be launched on July 2 and will cost 160 points, while the Carrier Battles Map Pack will follow on July 23, priced at 800 points. The Mustang Pack will allow players to customize both their single-player and multiplayer battles, also implementing several new units such as: the P-51 Mustang fighter (used mostly as bomber escort), Alaska Class warships (referred to as “cruiser killers”) and the heavy Super Yamato Class (which, in reality, never left the drawing board). The Carrier Battles Map Pack offers four new maps for all five multiplayer modes avaialble in Battlestations: Pacific. This DLC adds these war theaters: the Midway Islands, the Philippines, the Leyte Gulf and the Aleutian Islands.

The Gaikai team presents a Video Demo for Streaming Worlds technology

The team responsible for Gaikai, a new game streaming service showcased at E3 Expo 2009, launched a video demo showing that Streaming Worlds technology does indeed allow users to play in a browser titles with graphics specifications unsupported by the systems which access them. This is possible thanks to the fact that the games are in fact active on remote servers, and players access them as they would do in the case of a common video stream, without having to install a client or subsequent patches. In a trailer showed on the blog of developer David Perry (founder of Shiny Studios and responsible for titles such as Earthowrm Jim, MDK and Enter the Matrix), Streaming Worlds is used to play titles such as Spore, Need for Speed ProStreet, World of Warcraft and EVE Online from Mozilla Firefox. The Gaikai service is currently in closed beta.

NCsoft announces it will launch version 1.5 of MMORPG Aion on the Western market

NCsoft announced that the edition for Europe and North America of fantasy MMORPG Aion will include the improvements added by future update 1.5. This way, Western players will benefit from all the updates and patches implemented in the Asian version of Aion, including the third major update. The developers specified they will offer Aion 1.5 to Westerners in order to maintain content consistency in all regions. Aion will be launched in Europe on September 25.

Aspyr Media and 1C Company announced they will launch this fall in North America Men of War: Red Tide, a standalone expansion for real-time WW II strategy Men of War. Cenega informed us that, as a partner of publisher Paradox Interactive in Poland, The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania, it will publish two of the most important titles to be launched this year by the company: Hearts of Iron 3 and Majesty 2 – The Fantasy Kingdom Sim. The long-awaited sequel of fantasy strategy game Majesty: Realm of Arcania, Majesty 2 will have players act as rulers of the kingdom called Ardania, where heroes have a will of their own and will not blindly obey the sovereign's orders. Over 10 classes will be available to defend the kingdom against rampaging monsters, from noble warriors to wizards and barbarians, the heroes developing their skills as they successfully defeat their enemies. SOE announces new expansions for EverQuest I and II

Sony Online Entertainment announced at this year's edition of the Sony Fan Fair in Las Vegas the launch of two new expansions for fantasy MMORPGs EverQuest and EverQuest II. The sixteenth EverQuest add-on is called Underfoot, will be launched in November 2009 and it will feature a new underground area. As to Sentinel's Fate, the new EverQuest II expansion, it will become available in February 2010 and promises to raise the characters' level cap to 90. The developers also mentioned that: "Sentinel's Fate will allow you to play older, low-level content with a high-level character and still gain experience. SOE is also integrating various achievements into the game, such as killing 10,000 orcs or reaching level 80 with multiple characters."

The RPG based on the Aliens franchise was canceled

Following months of rumors about the fate of the project, one of Obsidian Entertainment's managers unveiled on the official forums that the RPG based on the Aliens franchise was indeed canceled. “Unfortunately, it is true that we are no longer working on the game, and we wanted to finally announce that officially to everyone who has been following its development.” The decision was later confirmed by SEGA, a company representative saying that they don't have any plans to continue the development of the Alien RPG at the moment.

Update 1.3 for EVE Online: Apocrypha will be launched on June 29

CCP Games presented on their official site the complete list of the changes to be introduced on June 29 in update 1.3 for Apocrypha (the latest expansion for space MMORPG EVE Online).
